 Kerala chana curry- Popular side dish of kerala which is mostly used in combination with kerala famous breakfast Puttu, Idiyappam and Appam.   Used black chana, you can also use kabuli chana for preparation.Good source of protein, good for weight loss, control diabetes and cholesterol etc. 

Kerala Chana curry

INGREDIENTS

  1. Chana- 1/2 cup
  2. Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  3. Curry leaves- As required
  4. Onion- 1 medium size
  5. Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  6. Garam masala- 1/2 tbsp
  7. Chilly powder- 2 tbsp
  8. Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  9. Garlic- 2-3 chopped
  10. Salt- As required

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Soak chana with required quantity of water for about 8 hours. Black chana
  • Drain the water and cook channa in low flame, with required amount of water and salt for upto 4-5 whistles. 
Boil chana
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seed,chopped garlic and curry leaves, let it splutter. Add sliced onion and saute until onion turns light brown in colour. 
Fried onion
  • Grind coconut, garam masala, chilly powder and turmeric powder into fine paste with required amount of water. 
Curry paste
  • Add grounded coconut paste and boiled chana to the pan. Add water according to your consistency. Add salt if needed.
Curry
  • Cook in medium flame for about 3 minutes and  finally add grounded chana. Used  2-3 tbsp from boiled chana for chana paste.
Kadala
  • Cook for about 2-3 minutes and chana curry is ready to serve. Kadala curry
TIPS
  • Adding chana paste enhances the flavour of dish.
